How to create a mesh in Adobe Illustrator

Hello everyone! In this tutorial I will teach you all how you can create a mesh in Adobe Illustrator. This tutorial contains 9 steps and should be easy to follow with.

End result:

At the end of the tutorial, I will leave some challenges for you to complete if you wish too. Good luck!

Step 1:

The first thing you need to do, is create a new Adobe Illustrator document. Does not matter the dimensions. This also works if you already have a project you have worked on.

Step 2:

Select the line tool from the toolbox, and make a straight line (Hold shift and drag). Make sure you give it a color you like.

Step 3:

Make sure the line is selected. Now while holding "ALT" on your keyboard, drag the line down. This will duplicate the line. Place the line so it's below the first one.

Step 4:

Now hold the Ctrl button on your keyboard, while pressing D (Ctrl + D) to duplicate the previous action. If you're on mac, it's (Cmd + D).
Keep clicking until you're happy with the amount of lines you have.

Step 5:

Now you need to select all the lines (Ctrl + A on windows, or Cmd + A on Mac). Once all the lines are selected, press the "Object" button in the top left corner. From there hover over "Envelope Distort", and click on "Make With Mesh".

Step 6:

This menu should pop up. Here you can set your grid size. I chose 6x6, but you can do more or less if you wish. When you're happy, press OK.

Step 7:

Make sure the "Direct Selection Tool" is active (Icon shown above). Now you can click and drag on any point on the mesh. You can drag in any direction you'd like, and you will se the mesh reacting to your movement. This way you can create some amazing looks.

Step 8:

Once you're done, it should look something like this. And this is how you can create and warp a mesh in Adobe Illustrator.

I hope everyone enjoyed this tutorial and that it helped you! Let me know if you have some questions by commenting!

Here are some challenges for you:
  1. Create a mesh with a 100x100 grid. Is it more or less flexible?
  2. Try creating the lines with a gradient. How does the mesh react with gradients?
